This week: Born in 1930, David Goldblatt has been photographing the people and structures of South Africa for around half a century. As Geoff Grundlingh writes, "His photographs have, through his brilliantly detailed and uncompromising vision, exposed the depth and ambiguities of the lives of individuals through the genre of documentary photography, while at once revealing the creative potential of the medium as an art form." The University of Cape Town pays tribute to his exceptional life's work this week when awarding Goldblatt its first ever Honorary Doctorate in Fine Art. See News. In other exciting developments Millennium II, a spacious new independent gallery, opens in Rosebank - fast becoming Johannesburg's 'art strip' - and preparations get underway for the 2002 DaimlerChrysler award for sculpture.
