Daniele Tamagni and Araminta de Clermont

Araminta de Clermont at Michael Hoppen Contemporary

Michael Hoppen Contemporary is pleased to bring together two contemporary photographers who have documented the sartorial expressions of particular communities in the Congo and South Africa. Daniele Tamagni has documented the creativity of a community in the Congo known as Les Sapeurs, a group (consisting mostly of men) which adheres to a subculture of highly tailored fashion called Le Sape (Society for the Advancement of People of Elegance). Araminta De Clermont has photographed a series of portraits of young girls dressed up for their matriculation dance in celebration of their graduation from school. They were shot on the Cape Flats, a vast area outlying Cape Town described by some as having been 'apartheid’s dumping ground'. The Matric Dance has a huge significance for the girls in these photographs, as well as their families. The resultant looks seem to speak volumes: about the hopes, dreams, aspirations and influences of young South Africans today.

'A New Beginning'

Araminta de Clermont at Joao Ferreira Gallery

In 'A New Beginning', de Clermont presents a new series of photographs that focus on recently initiated young Xhosa and Sotho men living in the townships surrounding Cape Town. A watershed for many young men, the initiation process gives an opportunity to start anew. The exhibition examines the conflicts and syntheses between tradition and contemporary urban living, and the impact that this process may or may not have in these young men's lives.

Life Less Ordinary: Performance and Display in South African Art'

Athi-Patra Ruga, Berni Searle, Brett Bailey, Zanele Muholi, Araminta de Clermont and Nandipha Mntambo at Ffotogallery

Ffotogallery, the national development agency for photography and lens-based media in Wales, presents ‘Life Less Ordinary’; a major exhibition held at two sites, featuring timely work by a selection of artists working and living in South Africa today.

'Life Less Ordinary' brings together photography, performance, video and installation work by a young generation of South African artists wishing to break away from epic narratives of race and instead play with, celebrate, stage and transcend more complex notions of difference and identity.

The exhibition features a range of work by artists Tracey Rose, Nandipha Mntambo, Zanele Muholi, Brett Murray, Pieter Hugo, Dineo Bopape, Brett Bailey, Athi-Patra Ruga, Steven Cohen, Araminta de Clermont and Berni Searle, including work selected for Artes Mundi 1 and acquired by the Museum of Wales for the national collection.

‘Life Less Ordinary’ has been curated by Anna Douglas and is a touring exhibition from the Djanogly Art Gallery, Lakeside Arts Centre at the University of Nottingham.
