'Library of the infinitesimally small and the unimaginably large'

Barbara Wildenboer at Erdmann Contemporary

Using images and metaphor to investigate the scientific contents of found reference books, Barbara Wildenboer tries to make sense of phenomena such as fractal geometry and the interconnectedness of all living things by creating visual metaphors that speak of a sense of wonder at the complicated beauty of patterns in nature.

For this exhibition, books were selected, not only for their physical characteristics such as typographical layout, size, wear, and paper quality, but also more specifically for their subject matter. Therefore the majority of the books are reference material such as encyclopedias, atlases and scientific textbooks, all sources which are linked by the subject matter of fractal geometry.

'Canaries in the Coalmine'

Barbara Wildenboer at Erdmann Contemporary

Canaries in the Coalmine is Barbara Wildenboer’s sixth solo exhibition. 'Solastalgia' is the premise for this exhibition, the term was coined by environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht in 2004 by combining the Latin word solacium (comfort) and the Greek word algae (pain). It is used to describe the emotional distress experienced when one realises that one’s home environment is under threat or changing; a form of homesickness one gets while one is still at home. Wildenboer uses a wide variety of media including paper sculpture, paper cutting, altered books, photography, animation and installation.
