'It's a Mask'

Bheki Khambule at KZNSA Gallery

Bheki Khambule was the winner of the 2008 Nivea Art Start Award and 'It's a Mask' is the solo exhibition which constituted one of his prizes. For his debut show, Khambule has drawn his central concept from the aphorism that ‘looks can be deceiving’. He uses portraiture to unpack this simple concept and, in the process, also unpacks his own identity. The act of portraying himself and the people around him is for Khambule an existential exploration.
