Girl You Know Its True

Carmen Sober at KZNSA

At the opening of Carmen Sober's 'Girl You Know It's True' at the KZNSA in February, I overheard a conversation between a viewer and the artist. This person told the artist that the boy who killed himself during an exam in a classroom in the '90s by smashing his face against the desk with sharpened pencils stuck into his nose, was from her school. I didn't believe her, as I was pretty sure that the story originated from my high school on the West Rand of Johannesburg.

In the foreground of Pencil, the aforementioned boy lies, presumably dead, on a desk, with a pencil up his nose and blood dripping from his eyes. The rest of the classroom is empty and calm. Puppy shows a burly lady looking grossed out by something that has exploded in her microwave, presumably her pet Chihuahua. In the short video piece Magic, Billy sits in front of a purple and lightning bolt backdrop that reads 'Mysteries of the Unexplained'. With his face blurred, he anonymously narrates how his penis shriveled up to nothing after being a victim of witchcraft. Another dead looking person with blood running out of a facial orifice lies in bed in a frilly pink nightie with an ostentatious hairstyle that shares the title of the work, Beehive.
