A Perfect Kind of Love

Joel Andrianomearisoa at Goodman Gallery Project Space

Joël Andrianomearisoa’s first solo exhibition at the Goodman Gallery Project Space, 'A Perfect Kind of Love', seduced me rather unexpectedly into taking seriously his sensual investigation into materiality. The gallery was transformed into a formal and conceptual meditation which utilized the potential of a range of materials and objects to evoke the power of the erotic as a tool to understand the complexities of desire. Cut Cute, a live performance that coincided with the end of the exhibition, underscored this and formed a crucial part of the exhibition. Staged in Fox Street, this ephemeral work also provided a necessary contemplative pause in SA Fashion Week’s Winter 2011 Collections’ proceedings at Arts on Main.

'A Perfect Kind of Love'

Joel Andrianomearisoa at Goodman Gallery Project Space

Malagasy artist Joël Andrianomearisoa's first solo exhibition in South Africa, 'A Perfect Kind of Love', is a meditation on material and sensuality, and the concept of perfection in the context of love. Andrianomearisoa asks if there can be a space for 'a darker love', one which transgresses the ideals of goodness, heroism and purity that underscore commonsensical notions of love.

Since its inception in 1984, the Cairo Biennale has been considered one of the most important cultural events in the Middle East. Conceived and initially designed to explore contemporary art in the Arab world, the concepts of the successive artistic directors expanded the interest to the global international arena. The biennale is produced by the fine arts sector of the Egyptian ministry of culture, and the exhibition is spread over the entirety of all public spaces managed by the sector.

'The Global Africa Project'

Joel Andrianomearisoa, Nontsikelelo Veleko and Meschac Gaba at Museum of Arts and Design

An unprecedented exhibition exploring the broad spectrum of contemporary African art, design, and craft worldwide, 'The Global Africa Project' premieres at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) on November 17, 2010. Featuring the work of more than 100 artists working in Africa, Europe, Asia, the United States, and the Caribbean, the exhibition surveys the rich pool of new talent emerging from the African continent and around the world. Through furniture, architecture, textiles, fashion, jewelry, ceramics, and basketry, as well as selective examples of photography, painting, sculpture, and installation work, the exhibition actively challenges conventional notions of a singular African aesthetic and identity, and reflects the integration of African art and design without making the usual distinctions between 'professional' and 'artisan'.
