'In Transit' and 'A re Fanon'

Mohau Modisakeng, Lerato Bereng and Laurence Bonvin at blank projects

'In Transit'

Laurence Bonvin showcases two series of photographic works focused on peripheral urban spaces, produced whilst in residency in Johannesburg and Cape Town in 2009.

The first series, titled 'Blikkiesdorp' (2009), focusses on the newly built township close to Delft South on the edges of Cape Town International Airport. Bonvin captures in striking detail through architecture, everyday life scenes and portraits, the living environment of these "transit homes".

'In & Out' (2009), Bonvin's second series, explores the margins of Johannesburg. A series of landscapes, her photographs reveal the fragmentation and complexity of a multi-faceted peri-urban fabric. It finds on the margins of the city different spaces that are at the same time undergoing deep transformations, yet still marked by the strict divisions imposed by Apartheid.

'A re Fanon'

"A re Fanon" is a process based project by Lerato Bereng and Mohau Modisakeng, commenting on language and its functions in our common social practice. This Setswana phrase literally translates as “He/she said Fanon!". The performance and installation will take the form of a lecture/discussion documented on a blackboard. The project questions the self-marginalization of art discourse from the broader spectrum of social language through the use of content-blurring mechanisms such as circumlocution and quotation. The terminology and manners of art discourse have been somewhat unquestioningly mirrored by South African art practitioners. The validation of thought and creative invention can arguably be summarized as being routed in inverted commas.
