Flatlands
Marc Shoul at KZNSA Gallery'Flatlands' focuses on the inner city of contemporary Johannesburg and documents people who have moved there – refugees searching for gold in one form or another. Shoul writes that he “wanted to document this new era of the Flatlands in post-Apartheid times. This huge mix of people and culture squeezed so tightly together in a place barely able contain it all”.

Maskerade, Flatlands and Artreach in Progress 2009
Marc Shoul, Lionel Davis and Artreach at AVALionel Davis will exhibit 'Maskerade' in the Main Gallery. As an ex- political prisoner Davis's work reflects his concern with socio-political issues. Maskerade a body of works on paper highlights his recent production while referencing past explorations.
In the Long Gallery, Marc Shoul presents 'Flatlands' a photographic exploration of inner city Johannesburg.
In the Artstrip, meanwhile, the AVA’s Artreach fund shows 'Artreach in Progress 2009'. Founded in the 1980s, the programme aims to broaden opportunities for visual artists in South Africa, encouraging art education, promoting through exposure, and by advancing cultural production across a wide spectrum of visual arts media.
