A Lasting Impression The Robert Hodgins Print Archive
Robert Hodgins at Wits Art MuseumThat, towards the end of his life, Robert Hodgins became one of SA’s very few living blue chip investments, would, I imagine, have been a source of great amusement to the artist. I didn’t know Hodgins, and anyway I’m cautious of writing criticism in such a way as to insinuate myself into the narrative (as has become the vogue on these shores lately). I did however meet him on two occasions. Once was at an opening at Gertrude Posel where he pointed out Penny Siopis as a rare beauty. The other time was as a curator scouring our fourth year studios for works to include in a group show. I remember him complaining about the acres of cock he’d had to endure in student works across the country. I have come to realise that the only things blue about him were an occasional turn of phrase and his overall pants, which he wore proudly to exhibition openings.

Editions for ArtThrob, in collaboration with South Africa’s leading artists, has developed a series of specially-commissioned prints; these are sold to cover the running costs of the ArtThrob website. ArtThrob is South Africa’s leading website on contemporary art, and is an important point of reference worldwide for curators, dealers and those interested in South African art.
Artists who have participated in the in the print program include William Kentridge, Penny Siopis, Robert Hodgins, Jane Alexander, Willem Boshoff, Nontsikelelo ‘Lolo’ Veleko, David Goldblatt, Guy Tillim, Lisa Brice, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Mikhael Subotzky, Peet Pienaar, Hentie van der Merwe and Tracey Rose.
In addition, we will be launching a brand new print by Robert Hodgins. Hot off the presses at Mark Attwood’s studio, the image will be available for preview the at exhibition opening.

Robert Hodgins at Wits Art MuseumThe Wits Art Museum presents an exhibition of the Robert Hodgins Print Archive, a show of around 160 works culled from an archive of over 600 prints. The show takes in the late Hodgins' collaborations with Deborah Bell and William Kentridge, and also looks at decades' worth of his output as a printmaker.

'Looking Back'
Robert Hodgins at Goodman GalleryAt the end of Robert Hodgins’ long life, he found being ill “just too tedious!” and was frustrated at the fact that “ I cannot paint!” He was involved in The Great Human Drama, right to his last day. He left a legacy of compelling work behind him, which is evident in the exhibition recently on at Wits Art Museum, a wide survey of his works in print media, and monotype.
Possessed of a mischievous and curious eye with which he critically evaluated the doings of humankind; a lively wit, the sensitivity to include himself in his impressions of our species, and a healthy cynicism, Hodgins was above all the keenest observer of life one could meet. Painting, drawing and printing constantly taught him more about life and the process of producing images. He approached his canvas or paper with feeling and intellect, and found the act of image-making exciting, amusing, but also an intelligent means to understand and examine life, in all its splendour and grossness at once.
This first solo exhibition at Goodman Gallery since his passing in March 2010 presents a full range of his diverse oeuvre, with pencil drawings, prints, a watercolour, tapestry, monoprints, ceramic sculpture and oil painting.

'Three Artists at the Caversham Press: Deborah Bell, Robert Hodgins and William Kentridge'
Robert Hodgins, Deborah Bell and William Kentridge at Boston University Art GalleryPresented concurrently with 'South Africa: Artists, Prints, Community - 25 Years at the Caversham Press' at Boston University’s 808 Gallery, this companion exhibition features the work of three South African artists who were important participants in the early years of The Caversham Press. Bell, Hodgins, and Kentridge forged long-term relationships with both Caversham and with each other, leading to the creation of three collaborative print portfolios - Hogarth in Johannesburg (1986), Little Morals (1990-91), and Ubu Tells the Truth (1996-97) - as well as numerous individual prints.
Together, the works reflect Caversham’s early history and articulate the artists’ personal perspectives of living and creating in South Africa in the years between late apartheid and the transition to a new democracy. The exhibition comprises over 65 works, presenting selections from the three collaborative portfolios, and individual prints, including the debut of three new William Kentridge prints created specifically for the exhibition.
