Wits Final Year Students at Various venues around Johannesburg
For the month of November, fourth-year and Masters students at the Wits School of Arts showcased their work to the public in a series of short exhibitions, curated for spaces at Wits University and surrounding spots in downtown Johannesburg. With a fairly full programme spread over the month, few besides WSOA lecturers managed to see every exhibition, but what follows is a reflection on those which I attended and thought noteworthy.
The exhibitions kicked off on October 29 with Nare Mokgotho and Molemo Moiloa’s curatorial effort, 'Gazart', an exhibition which took place at the old Roka Lounge in the 44 Stanley complex in Milpark. The title of the event, according to the curators, comes from the word ‘gazat’ which is ‘township slang that refers to a communal spirit of living...In an art context the term alludes to a DIY ethos which promotes independence and self-sufficiency on the part of artists’. Mokgotho and Moiloa, besides contributing their own work to the exhibition (a snack box designed to be shared amongst five people), collaborated with Ben Gapare, Pascal Bracher, Alex Vachos and Murray Turpin, all of whom contributed works in order collectively to create a group exhibition that resisted the domination of a single curatorial voice. This was an event that located itself outside the constraints of formal gallery culture.
