The Department of Arts and Culture in cooperation with Environmental Affairs and the City of Ethekwini present a commissioned work by Greg Streak: Fake Empire (Blue Monday). Situated between the sunken gardens and skate park on the Durban beachfront, the site-specific public sculpture is structured around the fluctuations of the Dow Jones Stock Exchange during the 2008 market crash. Reflected through a graph, and then superimposed onto the visual device of a cityscape (complete with rooftop garden) the work explores how the pursuit of capitalism is a persistent obstacle for environmental sustainability.
