'Transitions'
Paul Emmanuel at KZNSA Gallery
Paul Emmanuel's work is concerned with the liminal nature of transition. His exhibition 'Transitions' creates a contemplative space in which to meditate on transitory life stages, posing questions around perceptions of masculinity, patriarchy and the passage of time. 'Transitions' comprises a series of five ostensibly ‘photographic’ works which, when examined closely, are revealed to be a sensitively hand-drawn, photo-realist sequences of images. These film-like progressions obsessively capture five transitory moments. A sixth work – a twelve minute film produced by the artist – documents the head shaving of new recruits at the Third South African Infantry Battalion in Kimberley.

'Electric Flying Psycho Eternity Catcher'
Michael Croeser
Michael Croeser is increasingly well-known known for his meticulous, labour-intensive charcoal drawings. His subject matter is distortion, fueled by absurdity, mutation and decay. Croeser’s treatment of light is both sinister and beautiful, with voluminous shadows often swallowing up whole areas of the drawing. Croeser will exhibit four of these completed drawings, along with some of his reference material. In addition, the exhibition includes a series of spontaneous line drawings in coloured pencil crayons on paper, where freer compositions introduce an element of chance that is entirely contrary to his usual method of intricate planning.
'It's a Mask'
Bheki Khambule
Bheki Khambule was the winner of the 2008 Nivea Art Start Award and 'It's a Mask' is the solo exhibition which constituted one of his prizes. For his debut show, Khambule has drawn his central concept from the aphorism that ‘looks can be deceiving’. He uses portraiture to unpack this simple concept and, in the process, also unpacks his own identity. The act of portraying himself and the people around him is for Khambule an existential exploration.
