9th Dak'Art 2010 Biennale of Contemporary African Art in Senegal

The 9th edition of the Dak'Art Biennial kicks off in Dakar on May 7 2010.
The event has an extensive programme of events including talks, presentations, film screenings, exhibitions, walkabouts and fashion shows.

The 9th edition of the Dak'Art Biennial kicks off in Dakar on May 7 2010.
The event has an extensive programme of events including talks, presentations, film screenings, exhibitions, walkabouts and fashion shows.
Some highlights include the International Exhibition which will showcase recent works by the previous recipients (1992 – 2008) of the Président Léopold S. Senghor award - Dakart’s most prestigious award. This exhibition will also incorporate artists chosen by 5 curators from the nearly 300 applications to the Biennial. This final selection includes 25 artists representative of the 5 areas of the African continent.
The curators are Nigerian born artist, poet and historian Kunle Filani, South African writer and curator Marylin Martin, Senegalese curator and former marketing specialist Marème Malong Samb, author, globetrotting lawyer, author and sometime actor Sylvain Sankalé and Tunisian pedagog, curator and art critic Rachida Triki.
Dak’Art also presents a number of fringe events entitled OFF exhibitions. These shows will run concurrently to the main programme in various locations in Dakar as well as other cities in Senegal in particular Saint-Louis which celebrates its 350th anniversary this year.
The Biennale Village, a public success in 2008, returns this year and welcomes ‘biennalists’ in the heart of the IFAN Museum.
Also to be launched this year at the event are plans for Dak’Art 2012 which will mark the 20th anniversary of Dak’Art. The General curator for 2012 will be presented, and also 20 partners for the 20 years of the Biennale.
