In an unusual move for a primary-market institution, the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg is to hold an auction of work on 14 August 2011.
The lots available comprise work acquired by the gallery since its inception in 1966, and represent such luminaries of the South African art scene as Jane Alexander, Willem Boshoff, David Goldblatt, Brett Murray, Cyprian Shilakoe, Durant Sihlale, and Tracey Rose.
The gallery states that '100% of the auction proceeds of 18 lots will go directly to the organisation SHOUT For a Safer South Africa'. These include works by Deborah Bell, Hasan and Husain Essop, Judith Mason, Dan Rakgoathe, Senzeni Marasela, Sabelo Mlangeni and William Kentridge.
Musician Danny K, founding member of SHOUT, will serve as MC, announcing at certain times during the proceedings. There will also be a short musical performance.
Lots of interest to visitors and bidders will include an artist's book by Robert Hodgins (edition 94/100, at a high estimate of R4 000), a Norman Catherine airbrush on paper work at a high estimate of R18 000, a Cecil Skotnes silkscreen from a small edition of 3, estimated at R35 000, and a set of 7 photogravures with drypoint by William Kentridge, with a high estimate of R400 000 for the set.
Also expected to net high prices are small Pablo Picasso etching estimated at R120 000, a large Sam Nhlengethwa oil and collage work expected to near R240 000, a William Kentridge etching with hand-colouring with a high estimate of R395 000, and a mixed media work by Kendell Geers expected to approach the R300 000 mark.
The jewel in auction's crown, however, is another Kentridge: a 227 x 152cm drawing in charcoal and poster paint on pattern-making paper, titled Drawing for The Refusal of Time, yours for a steal, at an estimated R1.4m.
The event kicks off at 6.30pm.
