A new contemporary art gallery, called Commune 1, opened in Cape Town’s CBD on the 1st of September. Situated on Wale Street, the new space focuses on large format installation, sculpture and other non-commercial work.
Gallerist and art collector, Greg Dale, who has a background in cinematography and property development, says he hopes to entice those who might be intimidated by some of the Woodstock heavyweights, to visit art galleries.
The space itself, occupies the first floor of 64 Wale Street, (directly above recently opened artisan chocolate makers, Honest Chocolate, and designer Liam Mooney’s showroom) as well as a large double volume space behind the two shops, and a courtyard where Dale hopes to open a small coffee shop.
The gallery opened with a show of monumental installations by sculptor, Christopher Swift, and will be showing the work of the Michaelis MFA students next, and will also host the Michaelis Graduates silent auction fundraiser on the 13th September.
