South African photographer Pieter Hugo and cinematographer Michael Cleary have won a Young Director award for their part in the music video for Spoek Mathambo's Control.
The black and white video explores subject matter from township cults, street preaching and gangersterism and was shot in a boarding house in Langa, in collaboration with local dance group, Happy Feet. The song, a darkwave electronic cover of Joy Division’s song of the same name, comes from Mathambo’s first album, Mshini Wam.
The awards, presented as part of the Cannes Lions Festival last Thursday, honour young directors in short films, advertisements and music videos and are divided into different categories for EU and non-EU countries.
