‘It is a great honour. I am very grateful for the opportunity and honored to follow in the footsteps of the artists who have previously been given the award,’ said Subotzky.
In a statement justifying Subotzky’s selection, the National Arts Festival committee member, Brenton Maart, stated that, ‘Mikhael Subotzky's technical, aesthetic and academic explorations have seen him become one of the world's exciting photographers’.
As part of the prize, Subotsky's work will be featured in the main programme of the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, which next year runs from June 28 to July 8. He has promised that there will be ‘a few surprises’ in his exhibition.
