A double portrait from Zwelethu Mthethwa's 'The Brave Ones' series, bought through the ArtFund, is now part of the collection of the recently refurbished and reopened Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. The image shows two boys from South Africa's Shembe Nazareth Baptist community – a denomination which blends Christian and Zulu traditions. The two ‘Iscotch’ – young male members of the community – wear costumes inspired by kilts, a legacy of the Scottish regiments which occupied the area in the late-19th century.
The photograph features in 'Romantic Camera: Scottish Photography and the Modern World', the inaugural exhibition at the new Photography Gallery. According to a review in the latest edition of the Museums Journal, the reopening of the Gallery - with many major new acquisitions and a dedicated photography space - reflects an ongoing attempt to expand the purview of portraiture as well as to represent a wider view of Scottishness.
