WEBSITE OF THE MONTH

www.cell.nl/homeport/capetown

by Lauren Shantall

On show until January 15, the 'Homeport' exhibition connects six harbour cities in different continents, docking at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on the African leg of its voyage. Which is fortunate for those who could make it to a festive iKapa this silly season. The opportunity to combine the art of shopping and some art hopping from installation to installation has had tourists and locals alike wading through the packed waterside mall with strengthened resolve - many still looking as lost as ever. The landlocked need not despair, however, as the homepage for 'Homeport' serves admirably as a document. The website illuminates the event with maps, pictures, information on contributing artists, and essays by Sue Williamson, Vincent Kolbe and Natasha Becker.

The website was designed by Cape Town-based company FUR. Since they accompany a logo influenced by an old-fashioned sailors tattoo, the cutesy hearts and pretty-in-pink format do not seem out of place. The site was commissioned by Public Eye, the local co-ordinator of the 'Homeport' project. Initiated by the Rotterdam group Cell, 'Homeport' seeks to explore the qualities of each harbour city it features. To this end, Cape Town artists such as Andrew Putter, Doreen Southwood, Bridget Baker, Alan Alborough and others have all made contributions. You can use the virtual map of the V&A to navigate their site-specific works and then click through to artists' statements.
