Promoting and exposing the emerging artists of South Africa to the public is the drive behind the 2003 Sasol New Signatures Competition. This annual competition is open to all emerging artists who are older than 18 years. This is the 14th time that Sasol will be sponsoring the event.

This important annual competition, presented by the Association of Arts in Pretoria, and sponsored by Sasol, has been the launch pad for the careers of many of its previous winners. Many have gone on to become highly regarded South African artists building an ongoing vital and dynamic foundation to the visual arts in South Africa.

Artists wishing to enter this premium competition may submit a maximum of two works to the Pretoria Art Museum on Wednesday June 4, or Thursday June 5, between 10a.m and 4p.m. A committee will select approximately 100 works for the exhibition and will also announce the overall winner, who will receive R25 000. Two independent judges will select a winning work with a prize of R5 000 for the artist, and five merit awards of R1 000 each, will also be made.

Winners will be announced at the opening of this exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum on Wednesday June 18, at 7p.m.

Employment Opportunity: The NSA Gallery is looking for a dedicated person to assist with the installation of exhibitions. New exhibitions are installed every three weeks, and the time for preparing and moving in shows is between one and two days. The NSA handles a variety of art, including framed art works, unframed drawings, sculptures, dry-walling and electronic based work.

The gallery is looking for someone who can work under pressure, has his/her own tools (hammer, drill, tape measure, spirit level etc.), can take instruction, work fast and communicate well and is preferably from a visual art or art related background (or at least sympathetic to the cause of art).

David Krut Publishing is hosting an introductory 10-week course, aimed at post-graduate students, junior journalists, or arts practitioners who have a particular interest in writing on visual art specifically and the arts in general. The course will give particular preference to those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

The course will be led by Sean O'Toole. An experienced arts journalist, he has written on arts and culture for a number of publications, including the Mail and Guardian, Blueprint, Kyoto Journal and Dazed & Confused. He is also a former editor on SL magazine and contributing editor to the UK photographic publication Exit. In 2001 he edited an issue of the controversial Italian publication Colors.

The course will be limited in size to eight or 10 students, to ensure a high degree of one-on-one interaction. The approach will be practical, involving trips to view current exhibitions and installations, followed by individual assessments of the resulting written work. It will aim to make students more aware of their visual surroundings and more secure about their visual literacy. On completion of the course students should be able to write confidently on a variety of art topics and relate them to current social issues as appropriate.

The course will consist of weekly two-hour sessions on Saturday mornings, to accommodate those in full-time employment. The location will be David Krut Fine Art in Parkwood, Johannesburg, which consists of an intimate gallery space where works by contemporary South African artists are exhibited and a thriving print workshop for young and established artists. David Krut is also publisher of the respected TAXI art books series, which provides exposure for contemporary South African artists and their work. It is envisaged that a number of the TAXI artists and writers will be visiting tutors on the course.

A minimal fee of R10 per session will be levied from each participant, to cover the cost of photocopying, tea and coffee, etc.

Submissions are open for the 14th International Electronic Art Festival. The festival is organised by Associação Cultural Videobrasil and SESC, and this year celebrates 20 years of accomplishments and important innovations.

For the first time, it is possible to submit works on-line for the South Competitive Show at the site www.videobrasil.org.br. This is open to Portuguese-speaking artists as well as artists from Africa, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Middle East, Oceania and Southeast Asia. The show eliminates, for prize matters, the distinction between works in video and new media (web, CD-ROM). Besides the three money awards established by the jury, there will be a special prize granted by the French General Consulate in partnership with Le Fresnoy - Studio National Des Arts Contemporains, in France.

Artreach is a programme developed to provide emerging and established artists with an opportunity to market their work using the world wide web. Three artists will be chosen through a juried competition by submitting three to seven slides, an artist's statement and completed registration form.

Gilmore has more than 15 years experience in gallery and museum management. Prior to his position with the ACAH, he served as exhibitions manager for the CU Art Galleries at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and as director of both the MARS Artspace in Phoenix and the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art. He has also designed, prepared, installed and curated exhibitions for galleries including the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, Phoenix Art Museum and the Fleishcher Museum. Gilmore holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in fibre and painting with minors in art history, creative writing and poetry from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. He also has a Master's degree in Fine Arts in painting and drawing from Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. Gilmore currently serves as a board member of the Denver Art Museum's Alliance for Contemporary Art and is the chair of 'Meet Your Collection', a lecture programme for visiting artists.

Call for entries:
Artists, the general public and the media greeted a unique concept, the first 'Sasol Wax in Art' competition, held in 2002, with overwhelming enthusiasm. The exhibition was sponsored by Sasol, one of the world's largest producers of wax, and was conceptualised as a vehicle to explore the many and varied applications of wax in the art-making process. Approximately 2500 people came to view the exhibition last year over the two-and-a-half days it was open to the public.

Due to its unprecedented success in 2002, Sasol have expanded the scope of the 'Sasol Wax in Art' to accommodate entries from other parts of the country. Regional selections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and Gauteng. In June, selected works will be sent by Stuttafords Van Lines to Sasolburg and exhibited at the WAM! Festival from August 28 to September 1. The winners will be announced at an award function in Sasolburg.

- One main prize in each category of R 45 000
- Three merit prizes of R10 000ea

Categories
The competition is divided into two categories:
- Wax as part of the Process: where the use of wax is not immediately apparent to the viewer but was an integral part of the process of making the work. Such examples would include batik, etching and bronze casting.

- Wax as the Medium: where the use of wax is immediately apparent to the viewer. This includes wax sculpture, wax crayons, encaustic painting and installations utilising wax.

This competition is unique in that it does not only focus on young artists by placing an age limit on those who may enter. Any artist over the age of 21 may enter. (In the case of students, they have to be in their final year of study and meet the age requirements.)

Sculpture by the Sea is a free to the public exhibition of over 100 sculptures in all materials and forms from across the world, staged along Sydney's famous 2km Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk from October 30 - November 162002. With approximately 300,000 visitors the exhibition is one of the largest temporary sculpture exhibitions in the world. Sculpture sales in 2002 exceeded A$250 000 with artists� prizes and subsidies in excess of A$60 000.

Pursuant to the relevant provisions of Decision AHG/Dec.160 (XXXVII) adopted by the thirty-seventh Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the OAU meeting in Lusaka, Zambia, in July 2001, the Commission of the African Union shall organise three competitions for the best symbols of the African Union (AU), as follows:

The best anthem
The best flag
The best logo

General Guidelines:

All three competitions are open to nationals of all Member States.
It is possible for a candidate to submit entries for one or more of the three competitions.
Each work shall be a new creation or a modification of the OAU symbol
In composing the symbols, candidates shall draw inspiration from, the following values:
- struggle, defence, courage, sacrifice, victory, glory, peace;
- freedom, liberation, independence, sovereignty;
- work, effort, prosperity, wealth, industriousness;
- union, unity, solidarity, fraternity;
- sanctity of life, sacred nature of the African continent, purity, respect, dignity, justice, -durability, universality, eternity;
- hope, faith, future;

These values may be drawn from African history, culture, civilisation, spirituality, aspirations, geography etc. Similarly, reference may be made to Africa as one of the cradles of mankind.

Guidelines pertaining to the best Flag

Each work, executed in colour, shall be submitted in three copies, accompanied by a clear and concise explanatory note written in one or several working languages of the African Union: English, Arabic, French and Portuguese. The note shall indicate, amongst other things, the proposed meanings of the colours, designs, figures or symbols, if there are any, on the flag, as well as their respective sizes.

Name and full address of the candidate must be indicated.

Each work, executed in colour, and in black and white shall be submitted in three copies, accompanied by a clear and concise explanatory note written in one or several working languages of the African Union: English, Arabic, French and Portuguese. Entry deadline: April 30, 2003. Entries will not be returned to their owners.

The three best entries will be presented to the Second Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Union scheduled to take place in Maputo, Mozambique in July 2003, which will select the AU official symbols (anthem, flag and logo).

The Jury or the Assembly of Heads of State and Government may decide to modify an entry, without prejudice to the award meant for the laureate.

Of the three pre-selected entries, copyright as well as commercial and non-commercial rights shall be the property of the African Union.

The Commission reserves the right to use all or any part of all the entries submitted in whatever way it deems fit.

Participation in the competition implies acceptance of the provisions of these rules. No recourse shall be entertained about the outcome of the pre-selection, deliberations and the final choice.

The authors of the three best entries (anthems, flags, logos), who will be presented to the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, shall receive awards as follows:

The Programme UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists was created in 1994 to open new career prospects for young artists in all disciplines. The programme affords them the opportunity to continue their training in specialised institutions. This programme functions under the aegis of UNESCO's International Fund for the Promotion of Culture (IFPC).

At the beginning of the 1960s, the Swedish philanthropist couple Aschberg, donated a mansion located in Ile-de-France to UNESCO, which was eventually sold in 1992. In memory of the patrons and in keeping with the spirit of their donation, the governing bodies of UNESCO decided to allocate the money from this sale to the creation of the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists. The fellowships are co-financed by the International Fund for the Promotion of Culture and an international network of partner institutions specialised in the training of artists.

Since its creation, the programme has seen the number of fellowships granted and applications received regularly increase. Hundreds of young artists have already benefited from the programme. For 2003/2004, the programme proposes 57 fellowships offered by 50 partner institutions in 26 countries. The growing success of UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists has encouraged six new institutions to join the network. Simultaneously certain partner institutions have taken the decision to increase the number of fellowships proposed and to expand their co-operation to include new disciplines.

Selection is shared by an International Artistic Committee, which meets annually from June to July under the supervision of the IFPC, and the host institutions. The announcement of each fellowship has been examined so that the residency be presented as thoroughly as possible, and to give sound information on the host institution, the nature of the fellowship, the profile of the artist required and procedures to be followed to submit one's application.

Talented artists have a chance to prove their mettle by having their works showcased at the new Constitutional Court building through a competition launched by Justice Albie Sachs this week. The aim of the competition is to discover talented artists and crafters for the design of identified artwork sites in the new court building at Constitution Hill.

Addressing the media at the launch, Sachs called on all South African artists to submit their works or proposals for any of the approximately 30 sites earmarked for development. 'We are encouraging everyone to enter in order that the artwork finally included in the building will glow with the diverse imaginations of artists from all over the country,' stated Sachs.

It is believed the artworks will help complement the architectural finishes of the building and 'the integrated nature of the artworks will also create a permanent testament of collaboration between artists and architects'. The front door to the court building, metal security gates, sunscreens, signage, drinking fountains, light fittings as well as decoration of concrete columns are some of the examples of the building elements to be designed. The design of the eleven-artwork chimneys, required for the building's natural cooling systems is the biggest artwork site.

The Constitutional Court is the first civic building being built in the post-apartheid era in Gauteng and is being constructed on a 100-acre site housing the Old-Fort, renowned for jailing anti apartheid activists like Mahatma Gandhi and Nobel Peace Prize winners Chief Albert Luthuli and Nelson Mandela. 'This site will not only become an important symbol of our constitutional democracy but will also house libraries, archives, museums, commercial offices, shops, restaurants, heritage sites, exhibition performance spaces and other tourists facilities,' said Blue IQ CEO, Pradeep Maharaj.

MECAD/ESDI, in conjunction with UNESCO, is researching the international history of Media Art. "Our objective is focused, in its first stage, on artists of Africa, Asia and Latin America, who played a significant role in the development of the initial stage of Media Art, from end of the 1950s to the beginnings of the 1980s," explains Eduardo de Jesus of MECAD/ESDI.

"The general research objective is to generate new knowledge and documentation, which extend the historical point of view of Media Art," he explains. The intention is to include artistic contributions from countries outside the geographic scope of developed economies of North America and Central Europe. The project aims to collect and later disseminate basic information on artist's not generally or widely known.

"We are looking for Media Art pioneers in Africa and are calling on interested parties to collaborate with us in supplying basic information about pioneering media artists." MECAD/ESDI are requesting any relevant information, including names, websites, bibliographical references, etc. related to media. MECAD/ESDI and UNESCO's objective is to present a worldwide body of work that traces a panorama of Media Art and Electronic Music through a multilingual, public access portal.

After this initial enquiry is completed, MECAD/ESDI hope to research contemporary media artists, individuals who came to prominence after the 1980s. The deadline for any submissions is February, as in early March MECAD/ESDI have to start the translations to send to UNESCO.

Durban's NSA Gallery is inviting proposals for exhibitions by artists. The NSA Gallery has received funding from the National Lotteries Board for the 2003/2004 financial year, to be used for subsidising exhibitions at their venue. Artists and curators are invited to apply for exhibitions at our venue in three different categories: A committee, comprising professionals in the visual arts field, reviews incoming proposals on a monthly basis.

Ariel Cohen, whose second photographic exhibition Push opens this month in Cape Town, is looking to manage this unconventional space as an exhibition venue. Situated on an exterior wall, set slightly back from the street and enclosed by a fence, the space has been provided by the Saint Martini Church at the top of Long Street and is adjacent to the popular Marvel bar. Cohen is particularly interested in showing socially aware and relevant work in this space and invites proposals and ideas from similarly concerned artists. Cohen's latest body of work concerns Cape Town's homeless people who earn a meagre living from recycling scrap, which they transport in seconded shopping trolleys. His previous show Smashed focused on the faces damaged and disfigured by life on the city streets.

Joel Geolamen is an artist from Davao City, Philippines, and finalist in the 2002 show, 'The Dreamer and the Dreamed'. Geolamen's winning entry, Metamorphosis XXVI, demonstrates his pioneering technique of etching on photographs. He is a graduate of the Ford Academy of the Arts in Davao City.

Susanne Iles, comments, "I am very pleased with the calibre of volunteers we have attracted to the panel. Each brings a unique perspective to the show's theme, 'The Mythic Quest', which seeks to symbolically explore our journey through life."

According to the Oxford Dictionary, symbolist art seeks special symbols to express the essence of things by suggestion. It engages the viewer by appealing to the heart, personality and unconscious mind, as well as the intellect. The purpose of this one-of-a-kind event is threefold:

- To promote symbolist art and its importance in leading the viewer's imagination into the unseen world of thoughts, hopes, and fears. Symbols in art are a catalyst to personal revelation.

- To provide artists from all backgrounds with a convenient and meaningful online presence. Finalists and winners will be showcased for one year through to May 1, 2004, the date of the next show.

- To help art students gain exposure and bring together a diverse array of inspirational perspectives from around the world.

The International Juried Online Symbolist Art Show is an annual competition, which includes fantastic, visionary and surreal genres. Curated by Canadian artist and writer, Susanne Iles, the current show, 'The Dreamer and the Dreamed', is online through to May 1, 2003.

The Tirana Biennale 2 is looking for curators and ideas in order to create a real contemporary art event.

Dear friends,

I am currently working on the second edition of the Tirana Biennale that will take place in Prague next July 2003 at the beautiful site of Contemporary Art Museum of Elektrisny, a massive rationalist structure that is one of the most fascinating buildings in the world. I feel my extraordinary experience with the city of Tirana is exhausted. The Tirana Biennale 1 was made possible thanks to an enthusiasm and energy that is without equal, and in spite of the stress and the conditions of absolute emergency. The logistic difficulties (a non-existent budget, frequent lack of power and materials to install the show) was brilliantly overruled by the spirit of co-operation between artists and curators. The fact that Tirana Biennale 1 opened last September 14-15 - three days after the WTC attack - didn't prevent the participation of large number of artists, curators, and visitors from the whole Europe, but the trauma of those days limited the great flux expected from the every corner of the world.

At the moment we are working on this new TIRANA BIENNALE IN PRAGUE, that will be realized with a brand new formula in comparison to all the other international big art events. You know well my interest and passion work only when pressured by hard times. The Presidents of the second edition of the Tirana Biennale will be Milan Knizak, director of the Contemporary Art Museum, and me, Giancarlo Politi, publisher and editor of Flash Art. We will probably nominate a director and team of curators, who will have the duty of conceiving and designing this biennale. The Biennale will open during the first week of July 2003. At the moment we are forced to work within a very low budget (though it will increase to acceptable limits), but we feel the TIRANA BIENNALE IN PRAGUE will be the greatest cultural event in 2003. The formula will certainly be in tune with the times and the cultural changes currently on course - unlike all the other events. Further information will follow shortly.

A big exhibition today can take place only with different ideas and diverse input, and not with a show-off referee and a little one-idea oriented staff. That's why I'm here. This an international, juried, bi-monthly event. The goal of the contest is to provide a forum for gif animators to show off their handiwork. The animation must be an original created by you. Higher scores are awarded to those animations which use original artwork. Judges look for originality, creativity, humour, download time, visual impact and technical proficiency. Animations must not exceed 100k. You may submit up to four animations per month. First prize is $20 and the entry deadline is the 25th of each month.

Since 1982, Atlantic Center's residency programme has provided artists from all artistic disciplines with spaces to live, work, and collaborate during three-week residencies. Located just four miles from the east coast beaches of central Florida, the pine and palmetto wooded environment contains six award-winning studios that include a resource library, painting studio, sculpture studio, music studio, dance studio, black box theatre, writer's studio, and digital computer lab. Each residency session includes three master artists from different disciplines. The master artists each personally select a group of associates - talented, emerging, mid-career artists - through a formal application process administered by ACA. During the residency, artists participate in formal sessions with their group, collaborate on projects, and work independently. The relaxed atmosphere and unstructured programme provide considerable time for artistic regeneration and creation. Room and board is free to accepted artists.

Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder (LKV) was established in 1993. The name means "artists' workshops in Lademoen" (Lademoen is the name of a part of Trondheim). LKV contains 34 artists' studios, 6 workshops and 2 guest studios. The studios and workshops are located in an old school building dating from the turn of the century. The five-storey building has a total floor area of 2 264m². In addition to 34 private studios the facility also includes two project rooms at 90 and 55m² respectively. Over the last 6 years we have built up a printmaking workshop, photographic dark room, metal and welding workshop, carpentry, a computer room and digital video editing suite. LKV is run as a foundation.

LKV offers two guest studios (50m², headroom 3,8m). The studios contain some basic tools (hammer, screwdrivers, stapler etc). The studio flats (30m², fully furnished accommodation includes bedroom/living room, kitchen and bathroom) are located in a connected building. Both the studios and the flats are provided free of charge to artists from all over the world for a duration of 1 to 3 months. Longer residency can be negotiated in special circumstances. The rent for the studios is paid by the local authorities.

Residents may be asked to give lectures about their work for other artists in Trondheim. LKV does not have a gallery, any exhibition must take place in the studio, in one of our project rooms or outside LKV's premises. Guest artists may use the workshops by paying a fee. The guest artists are selected once a year by a committee of 3 professional artists on the basis of applications with slides or other documentation of work.

Trondheim is situated in the centre of Norway and lies on a fjord two hours from the open sea. The city is surrounded by a fine landscape of agricultural land, forests, hills and highlands with more mountainous regions to the south and east. Trondheim is the 3rd largest city in Norway. The city has throughout history been a cultural, spiritual, commercial and an educational centre including the University (NTNU) with institutes for film and drama, philosophy, anthropology, architecture, industrial design, construction technology and technical research. Trondheim has a rich cultural life with an art academy, music conservatory, symphony orchestra, concert hall, theatres, cinemas, clubs, bars and cafes.
