The Internet Archive: saving us from a digital Dark Age
by Chad Rossouw

Archiving human knowledge has been one of humanity's enduring projects. From the Library at Alexandria, to dark dusty monasteries and Timbuktu, librarians have been the sexy heroes of cataloguing, whipping data into order and preserving the records of our forays into the word. Bizarrely, as we have moved forward into the Age of Information, archiving has become a more difficult task despite the longevity of digital information.

Firstly it's the matter of overkill. More information exists today, which provides problems of both time and space. This is a pity: no central archive exists of television, no catalogue of Nollywood films exists. The second problem is a matter of formatting. It's hard these days to access something that will read floppy discs, those big 90s relics with their magnificent 720k. Magnetic tape is another story altogether.

Even worse is that file formats become obsolete with rapidly evolving software. In a famous example, a University of Southern California neurobiologist has been unable to read magnetic tapes from NASA's 1976 Viking landings on Mars as the data was in an unknown format and the original programmers had either died or left NASA. That's only 30 years ago, whereas books from the Middle Ages are still legible.

The Internet Archive is perhaps one of the greatest journeys taken by librarians in the modern age. Available at archive.org, it's mission is to create an accessible digital library. It includes snapshots of the Web archived regularly over time, digital movies, audio, images, software and text. To provide stability the entire site is, rather aptly, mirrored at the Bibliotecha Alexandrina in Egypt.

The Wayback Machine, which archives the Internet, had, in 2006, over 2 Petabytes of information safely stored (That's 1 125 899 906 842 624 bytes, or basically more than you can imagine) and grows at a rate of 20 terabytes a month. The site also contains many millions of copyright-free or CC licensed books, movies, music and other media.

This is the sort of thing that will be ridiculously useful in the future. But for now, if you'll excuse me, I've just finished downloading Night of the Living Dead.
