Life and 2 pieces
Carlos Garaicoa, Cuba, |
Cape TownAt the Association of Visual Arts, Brendhan Dickerson will be showing 'marvels and absurdities' in steel and mixed media on a Carnival Show which opens at the Association For Visual Arts on August 4. Showing with him is Julia Tiffin and Michelle du Toit in a joint exhibition of painting and photography called Skin. Icelandic artist Karolina Larusdottir will also be on show.Opening at the Hanel on August 3 is Lisa Brice with a show called Staying Alive. Brice explores the strangeness of life in South Africa where domestic and recreational activities take place against a background of flickering suburban crime. The gallery will be installed with panels immaculately upholstered in white plastic providing the surface for welded wire drawings. A long-awaited collaboration between artists from each of the three countries involved in the Angolan war, Gavin Younge from South Africa, Fernando Alvim from Angola and Carlos Garaicoa from Cuba, opened in B Block at the Cape Town Castle on August 1. Entitled Memorias Intimas Marcas, the show is a sustained and powerful interrogation of aspects of the Angolan war. In preparation, the artists travelled to Cuito Cuanavale, the site of the largest battle between South Africa and Angola, heavily supported by Cuban troops. The battle was the turning point of the war, presaging the eventual pulling out of the Cuban troops from Angola, and the South African troops from Angola and Namibia. This is a show not to be missed. Until September 7. |
