Peet Pienaar and Andrew Putter on award patrol |
AWARDS by Andrew Putter and Peet Pienaar "Originally we had the idea of dressing up as ART POLICE and giving people tickets for making bad culture (like wearing designer labels too prominently, or playing HOUSE music, or having crap lighting, or dancing boringly). But then we decided we'd give tickets that were actually AWARDS. This last year we spent lots of time downtown - especially at night: lots of pranks, terroristic behaviour, guerrilla art, etc. You start to notice who are putting their necks out culturally, providing good chill spots, exciting dance music, tasty, nourishing food... We put together two outfits out of some old Potchefstroom police uniforms, and designed a book of tickets that said: AWARD, Presented to (with a space for us to write in the name of the awardee), In Recognition of (with a space to write why they were being given the award), and then a place for us to sign the work. One night just before Christmas, we wandered around the city and visited our favourite haunts, and gave AWARDS to everyone that deserved them - mostly clubs, bars, little theatres, and sexy door ladies. Only one award had something negative on it. It was an award we gave to Manhattens, our neighbourhood bar - for sweet christmas decorations, and bad art (they have these cheesy "exhibitions" of art on the bar walls). They were a bit put out and scowled at us for a day or two. Everyone else seemed really pleased."
