THIS WEEK:

Our final update for 2002 concludes with a contemplative look back at the year that was. ArtThrob approached a number of individuals involved in the South African arts scene, asking them to list their favourite shows of the year - as well as their biggest disappointments. We also offer a detailed list of the year's most inspiring print offerings.

At this point, ArtThrob would like to thank all those who have supported the site throughout the year. All your comments, opinions and well wishes have been invaluable to the team's morale and give us a sense of purpose. In 2003 ArtThrob will continue with its on-going commitment to critical debate. As the various exchanges listed on the site throughout the past year have proved, the contemporary art community is home to a diverse range of opinions. ArtThrob will continue to give voice to these from January 15, after a necessary break.

Next Update: 16 January 2003

CAPE

William Kentridge offers a retrospective glance at his significant oeuvre at the South African National Gallery, Rose Korber's Salon at The Bay Hotel offers an important snapshot of local art for contemporary art buyers, while the acclaimed artist Zwelethu Mthethwa showcases his work at the AVA. John Murray holds his second one-person show this year, at the Art. b in Bellville.

Edoardo Villa, Cecil Skotnes, Sydney Kumalo, Cyprian Shilakoe, Zimbabwe's Nicholas Mukomberanwa, Jackson Hlungwane, Nelson Mukhuba and Johannes Maswanganyi all appear on 'Origins of Form' at Warren Siebriets new gallery. Across the road, Norman Catherine shows at the Goodman. In Pretoria, Jane Alexander showcases her award-winning anthropomorphic 'African Adventure' series.

Long a resident of Durban, Jeremy Wafer returns to the city with his critically acclaimed retrospective. Red Eye @rt promise an evening of extraordinary fun at the Durban City Hall, while Home touts itself as a new home for contemporary art in Durban.

AIDS in Africa is the theme of a new show of contemporary work in Berlin. Conrad Botes and Zwelethu Mthethwa show together on a new group show in Italy. The large group show, South African Family Stories is still on view in Amsterdam, while Rory Bester and Amanda Carlson's 'The Field's Edge', a show that focuses US attention on major themes around narratives of domestic life and the Diaspora, wraps up shortly in Florida.

REVIEWS

Mgcineni 'Pro' Sobopha hails Zwelethu Mthethwa's "compelling and layered" solo exhibition at the AVA. "The beauty of allegory is in full force here," writes Kathryn Smith in her review of Jane Alexander's show in Pretoria. "This exhibition introduces a new kind of narrative to Alexander's oeuvre." In Johannesburg, Michelle Matthews attends Norman Catherine's show at the Goodman Gallery, while Virginia MacKenny assesses what's on offer at the Durban Art Gallery. Sean O'Toole offers his thoughts on David Koloane's new Taxi Art book. In a somewhat unorthodox review, we feature Candice Breitz discussing Bill Viola's The Greeting, currently on show at San Antonio's The McNay Gallery. The young South African artist's commentary offers a suggestive insight into Breitz's own views on video art.
NEWS

Berni Searle is the Standard Bank Young Artist for 2004. Kendell Geers thought Siemon Allen's show in New York was 2002's best, while Sophie Perryer lists Angela Ferreira's Zip Zap Circus School. See these and a host of other individual's reviews of 2002. William Kentridge is an artist of global significance. We buttress this opinion by calling on a host of local and international critics, cataloguing the great diversity of opinion surrounding Kentridge. Robert Greig says lists 'amount to consumer guidance'; we vindicate his opinion in our Christmas-focussed listing of the year's best art books and catalogues.
SUE WILLIAMSON'S DIARY

Sue Williamson takes in three Cape Town openings before heading off to workshop in Argentina.
ART BIO

His photographs have documented the prosaic realities of Boksburg and Dainfern, described the assault of apartheid and looked at the structure of things past and present. His photographic memory stretches back five decades, offering an unerring portrait of South Africa. International audiences have been greatly impressed by his output, recently exhibited on 'The Short Century' and 'Documenta XI'. David Goldblatt is our featured artist.
