A project website that serves as a virtual complement to the large exhibition 'Group Portrait: Nine South African Families', at the KIT Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. Over the course of the exhibition, the website will continue to follow the evolving lives of the nine families who participated in the show, collecting their comments on events. This, it is touted, serves as an alternate form of news about South Africa. Not without its navigational problems, the site nonetheless offers an intriguing opportunity to view some of the existing exchanges that have taken place between South Africa and the Netherlands.
Arts writer Darryl Accone, for instance, offers this intriguing diary entry on the experience of being Chinese in South Africa. "Neither Eastern nor Western, not Asian, not African, classified non-white in the old South Africa but not deemed previously disadvantaged in the new, we live in perpetual bifurcation. Home is here, at the tip of Africa, but also across the sea, as it was for my Hong Kong, my grandfather." A site that merits more than just a pause.
