Rochelle Keene resigns from the JAG
Rochelle Keene, the long-standing Director of the Johannesburg Art Gallery, has resigned. The news was officially announced late in November. The effective date of the termination of her contract is still being negotiated.
Keene, who last year was at the centre of a heated public debate with artist Kendell Geers, played a pivotal role - early in the 1990s - in researching formative shows such as The Neglected Tradition. More recently she facilitated the touring retrospective of the painter Gladys Mgudlandlu.
Her activities in piloting the gallery through its difficult transitionary phase have drawn widespread praise, despite the often-acrimonious nature of public debate following the theft and damage of key artworks in the gallery's collection.
No successor has yet been officially named, even though Keene has privately spoken of her own appointment as an arts consultant to a well-known corporate collection.
