Sisters doing it for themselves
Seven locally-based female comic artists, including Paddy Bouma, Karlien de Villiers and Leonora van Staden, have contributed to producing a new 56-page comic book titled Stripshow. The magazine, an all female effort, aims to rectify the gender imbalance that exists in the world of comics.
"We aim to tell the stories of ordinary South African woman, inspired by our own experiences and beliefs," comment joint editors Leonora van Staden and Nicolene Louw. "It has never been done in South Africa".
"The comic genre has traditionally been male dominated," they further elaborate. "We feel that women have an unique perspective on life that needs to be voiced and visually represented".
Many of the contributors are Honours and Master students in illustration at the University of Stellenbosch, an institution closely associated with Conrad Botes and Anton Kannemeyer's groundbreaking Bitterkomix publication.
