VANSA, KwaZulu Natal Chapter

VANSA, the Visual Arts Network South Africa, is calling for a unified voice for the visual arts to help lobby government on artists' needs in the country. Regional launches are occurring nationwide this month and the public in KwaZulu Natal are invited to attend the launch of VANSA in Durban at KwaMuhle Museum, 130 Ordinance Road, on Saturday March 22 2003 at 10.00 a.m.

Members of the public are invited to:

    1. Hear the mission of the organisation.
    2. Adopt a founding document for the organisation.
    3. Elect leadership for the KwaZulu Natal branch of VANSA.
    4. Become a member of VANSA
    5. Network with colleagues
    6. Place art issues on the agenda.

VANSA is an organisation for all individuals, organisations and businesses that are involved in visual arts. Initiated on November 16, 2002 when a group of visual arts practitioners and administrators from Gauteng, Durban and Cape Town met in Johannesburg and established an Interim Steering Committee the organisation aims to provide artists with a collective voice to represent artists' interests to government, statutory bodies, the media and the general public.

Using a similar model to the one that resulted in the launch of the Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA), the Interim Steering Committee, chaired by Frank Ledimo of Wits Art Galleries, agreed to launch a branch of VANSA in Gauteng on 15 March, in Durban on 22 March and in Cape Town on 27 March 2003. Each of these provinces will be linked to less-resourced provinces to assist them in the establishment of VANSA branches there. VANSA KZN will initially represent the Orange Free State and Eastern Cape, until such time as these provinces set up their own branches.

All existing visual arts national, provincial and local organisations are eligible for membership, along with new organisations and individuals. It is not the intention of the Network that any organization should disband or lose its identity, unless it decides to do so of its own accord. The purpose of the Network is to serve as an umbrella body linking practitioners and organisations in the visual arts sector.
