Fela Kuti & African Art

Black President: The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti

Authentic / Ex-Centric

Authentic / Ex-Centric : Conceptualism in Contemporary African Art

WEBSITE OF THE MONTH

   Fela Kuti & African Art
www.newmuseum.org

'Black President: The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti', a group show at New York's New Museum of Contemporary Art, celebrated the life and influence of the Nigerian musician-activist-cult figure known simply as Fela Kuti. Amongst the various artists participating in this show were Kendell Geers, Moshekwa Langa, Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky, Odili Donald Odita, Olu Oguibe, Yinka Shonibare and Fred Wilson. Hailed by critic Barbara Pollack as a show that unearths the West's own provincialism, this website addendum includes an interview with curator Trevor Schoonmaker, as well as a musical timeline celebrating the context for the cultural and political environment in which Fela's Afrobeat was created and developed.

NEW LISTINGS

   Printed Matter
http://www.printedmatter.org

The show 'Authentic / Ex-Centric : Conceptualism in Contemporary African Art', a major exhibition of African art at the 2001 Venice Biennale, has set a benchmark standard for all future shows tackling this continent. Not always acknowledged for her contribution to this show is the Dutch book designer Irma Boom. According to Boom, curator Salah M. Hassan was rather taken aback by her innovative design. Sadly few of us have the opportunity to take sides, which is where the New York based fits in. Founded in 1976 by artists and artworkers, Printed Matter is the world's largest non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion and distribution of publications made by artists. Kendell Geers, for instance, is featured in the publication Trans> (#8), which also includes a bubblegum cover by Paul McCarthy.
