From: Donna M. Keefe, Project Director, Sondela
Subject: Sondela - Decade of Democracy
Date received: February 10

Thank you for listing our show 'A Decade of Democracy: Witnessing South Africa' on ArtThrob. Sondela is a project of the South Africa Development Fund, Inc. Boston, MA. I bring this information to your attention for several reasons. One is that, as the founder, I had met with numerous people in South Africa and communicated with numerous people via e-mail and phone who would not recognize this exhibition as the one that included their time and effort towards this project over the past seven years.

I travelled and met with many people who know sondela, but not the title of this show. I would like people to know that a show did materialize from their involvement and support. Also, the South Africa Development Fund in Boston was instrumental in helping to obtain funding from the Rockefeller Foundation for this project. Barry Gaither of the National Center of Afro-American Artists and Gary van Wyk from Axis Gallery all gave enormous input and participation in the development and execution of this project as advisors and editor. I believe it is important to give credit to the people and the organizations in the United States that helped to bring the show to Boston.

Perhaps your listing is not the appropriate place for this information, but as the project director, I felt it was my responsibility to present this to you as editor due to the great appreciation I have for the project team and support network in South Africa. I was disappointed to see that such important information was omitted. We have a great many partners consisting of South Africans and Americans who collaborated to great extent for this exhibition to be made possible. I feel that it is important to recognize the key players and their hard work.

Please note that the exhibition will be at the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists. Exhibition dates: April 2, 2004 to July 31, 2004.

Thank you,
Donna M. Keefe

Thank you for pointing this out. As a general working rule, we do not acknowledge funders and sponsors. This might be short-sighted given the reliance of artists and art shows on corporate and government funding, but the intention of our listings section is to offer pithy overviews of selected events, with website addresses to facilitate further reading for those interested in more information.
