New editor for Art South Africa
by Kresta Tyler Johnson
After nearly two years at the editorial helm of the Art South Africa, Sophie Perryer has decided to hand over the reins and focus on other endeavours. Perryer proved capable of negotiating the difficult waters that surround creating and maintaining a successful publication on contemporary South African art. In its short life, the publication has become a leading forum for the prominent discourses in South African art today as well as a forecaster of what lies ahead.
Perryer is currently editing a book to be jointly published by Bell-Roberts and Struik, 10 years 100 artists, due out in October, as well as participating as one of five curators on the upcoming exhibition in New York, 'Personal Affects: Power and Poetics in Contemporary South African Art' opening in September.
The arduous position of editor is being taken on, at least initially, by Sean O'Toole, former editor-in-chief of ArtThrob. A new era is ahead, but there is no doubt as to the skill and knowledge O'Toole possesses. While a different voice may be directing, it will none the less ensure the standards of the magazine continue without a blip.
