Aspiring South African artist wins Visa Olympics of the Imagination and a trip to Athens
13-year old Kgalalelo Gaitate from Buccleuch, Johannesburg became the recent winner of the Visa International competition, 'Visa Olympics of the Imagination'. She will be joining 30 other children from participating countries at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens as a guest of Visa.
Gaitate was one of numerous children throughout South Africa between the ages of nine and 13 who entered a work of art that sought to represent "How the Olympic Games Can Help Create a Better Future". Taking into consideration artistic merit, originality and the overall visual interpretation of the theme, judges felt Gaitate's work, One World, One Vision, Better Future was the strongest submission.
In her first trip overseas, Gaitate and her legal guardian will fly to Athens on August 12 and spend five days attending Olympic events and sightseeing. A 'Best of Show' award will be given at the opening of the exhibition at the Olympics, and each child will receive a medal for their contribution.
The exhibition will continue in Athens during the Games, and will be featured on screen savers, postcards and other materials. Host countries will then feature local exhibitions of the art, but South Africa has yet to announce where they will show Gaitate's work.
