Artists for the 2006 Dakar Biennale announced
The selection committee for the 2006 African contemporary art Biennial, Dak'Art, has released the names of 87 artists chosen for the main exhibition of the forthcoming event, considered to be one of the most important art events on the continent. Under the artistic direction of Ousseynou Wade, the general commissioner this year is Yacouba Konate, of the Cote d'Ivoire. Dak'Art opens in May of even numbered years, with a focus on artists of Africa and the African diaspora.
Previous events have come under criticism from critics and participating artists alike for lack of communication and weak organisational infrastructure, but Dak'Art remains the only event where the new work of such a wide cross section of African artists can be seen. The South African artistic contingent comprises Wim Botha, Churchill Madikida, Colbert Mashile, Robin Rhode, Berni Searle, and Andrew Tshabangu.
