David Goldblatt wins world's most important photography award

South Africa's most distinguished photographer, David Goldblatt has been announced as the 2006 winner of the annual Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. granted to 'a photographer recognised for major achievements'.

This may be an individual who has made a pioneering achievement in photography, who has had a decisive impact on one or more younger generations of photographers, or one who has implemented one or more internationally significant photographic projects. The award comprises the sum of SEK 500 000, (R395 000) a gold medal and a diploma. In conjunction with the award ceremony, an exhibition of the work of the award winner opens at the Hasselblad Center exhibition wing of the Göteborg Art Museum.

Previous winners include Ansel Adamas, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, William Eggleston, Cindy Sherman and Jeff Wall.

The Hasselblad award is considered to be the most important prize in photography in the world today. The award will be presented in October or November by a representative of the Swedish royal family at a formal ceremony in Göteborg, with the winner's exhibition opening on the same day at the Hasselblad Center.
