Frances Goodman cleans up at Art Basel
One of the cornerstone events on the European art fair circuit is Art Basel. Johannesburg's own Goodman Gallery is the only South African gallery to be represented on this fair, and one of its rising young stars Frances Goodman is proving to be hot property. Within the first two hours of the fair, 20 of Goodman's beaded cushion works had sold, and orders were received for a further 40.
The works pit seductive surfaces and labour-intensive production processes against the viscerality and immediacy of the words and phrases they contain. Essentially wall-mounted sculptures, the works operate together as wall-based installations.
