Sasol Wax Art Award
by Michael Smith

The 'Sasol Wax Art Award' exhibition will take place at Aardklop arts festival in Potchefstroom later this year. Previously, entrants were required to submit works for judging by a panel. This year, submissions took the form of nominations. From these several will be chosen and commissioned to submit proposals for a body of work, incorporating in any way, the use of wax. Finalists will then be chosen to produce their proposed work

Nominations closed on February 20 and the judges will soon begin the task of whittling the entries down to 10 semi-finalists, through a 'comprehensive nomination and judging process'. Organiser Carola Ross said, 'Nominations have been arriving since the Award was launched in December last year. The standard of this year's 'Sasol Wax Art Award' promises to be exceptional; we have already received nominations form some of the country's top artists.'

The 'Sasol Wax Art Award' is intended to fill a perceived gap in the competition circuit in SA. The organisers state that the competition was launched 'with the aim of recognising innovation and excellence in the visual arts, by rewarding professional artists for their contribution. While there are many competitions for young and emerging artists, there are few opportunities to recognise professional career artists in South Africa.'

The Award carries a significant total prize value of R130 000, and the top five finalists will each receive R20 000 towards the production of their body of work.

Walkabouts of Norman Catherine exhibition at JAG
by Michael Smith

As part of a continuing programme of Education Support, the Johannesburg Art Gallery presents a series of walkabouts of the current Norman Catherine retrospective. They will be presented by the following local luminaries:
Linda Goodman: 12pm, Thursday March 9
Norman Catherine: 6pm, Thursday March 30

These promise to be valuable in navigating and illuminating the dense and prodigious output of this important artist.
