iLetters project invites contributions

Artists are invited to participate in a collaborative project to formulate uniquely South African scripts and phrases to engrave on stones of up to 300 kg. The artworks will be auctioned in Belgium, with the proceeds going to charities for underprivileged South African schoolchildren.

The project is the brainchild of Belgian lettercarver Maud Bakaert, who is running workshops in Cape Town from February 6 - 10 to design 'new, exciting and uniquely South African scripts'. The iLetters workshops are part of the 'Letters of Hope' project that includes various collaborations where lettering forms one important element.

Workshops will be presented by the graffiti artist Mak1one, professional calligrapher Andrew van der Merwe, designer Hilary Adams, calligraphy teacher Heleen de Haas and Maud Bakaert.

The venues are split between the Natural History Museum and Tygerberg Art Centre. The fee is R250 per workshop or R600 for all five.
