'Naked Heart' at Durban Manor
Hot and steamy takes on a whole new perspective when the historic Durban Manor on the Victoria Embankment hosts 'Naked Heart' on February 10. Expect the unexpected as acclaimed choreographer and show producer David Gouldie blends his brand of performance art with the dance culture of iconic DJ Martin McHale. The two worlds collide in a party fantasy of music, fashion, intervention theatre, drama, art and dance in the heart of old Victorian Durban.
The journey begins at 8pm in a Midsummer Night's Dream garden filled with mystical creatures, living statues and haunting vocalists. Patrons are then invited to explore the colonial splendour of Durban Manor as they sip champagne in a schmoozy jazz/cigar bar featuring Iain 'Ewok' Robinson's unique brand of slam poetry, the smooth sounds of band Beetroot and avant garde fashion by Rozanne Immerman, showcased by models from Models International.
The next highlight is a unique fashion installation by designers Gideon and Gianpoalo, followed by the opportunity to chill out in the intimate cinema privé, which will screen short art films by Aryan Kaganof, Peter Engblom, Jackie Briniquel, Carla Erasmus and Tamlyn Martin. Dance fans, meanwhile, are invited by KZN DanceLink to experience a new contemporary work by Phenduka Dance Company, hip-hop moves by Siwela Sonke's Bright Spark Theatre group and a display by Nateshwar Dance Company.
Visual artists Carla Erasmus, Christiaan Nagel, Sinta Margot Spectre and photographer Christopher Laurenz add to the mix in a constantly evolving exhibition of their individual expression. The journey continues as performance artists Joanne Yeatman and Richard Charlton Sivil present their specially choreographed work, Beyond Words.
From 10pm the party gets funky as the two dance floors kick in with music by top DJs Martin McHale, Ryan Dent, Coco Loco, Mylo, Warren Rhodes and Marc T. Helping McHale get the groove going will be Durban pop princess Lauren Laing with a troupe of drop-dead gorgeous dancing girls.
Six separate bars will offer everything from shooters to champagne and decadent desserts, while VIPs in the lounges upstairs can expect a few surprise treats.
Tickets can be purchased at Computicket, the Arts Café (NSA Gallery) or Idols (Musgrave and Pavilion). Pre-sale general entrance tickets are R150 and VIP tickets (private entrance, lounge, bar facilities) are R250. Tickets at the door will be R200.
