Documentary photographers receive accolades
by Tavish McIntosh
Just as Pieter Hugo prepares to mount his exhibition for the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, another young South African photographer, Mikhael Subotzky, has received accolades for his his 'raw energy and passion' with the award of the KLM Paul Huf Award 2007. This was jointly awarded to Subotzky and American Taryn Simon. The award is aimed at young photographers. Both photographers will get a cash award of 10 000 Euros, a three-week residency in Amsterdam, and an exhibition at Foam in September 2007.
It seems that the strong tradition of documentary photography in South Africa is finally coming into its own, being recognised as an artistic medium in its own right.
