'Wonderland'

Nontsikelelo Veleko at Standard Bank Gallery

Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for 2008, Nontsikelelo ‘Lolo’ Veleko’s photographic exhibition, ‘Wonderland’, envisions a place in which Veleko, and her fellow urban hipsters, can be precisely who they want to be. Veleko has never made any bones about the fact that this place is essentially a construct, but the terms for citizenship are real enough – and they’re about ‘the look’. If you’ve got it, you’re in, if not, ah well...

Not that this is necessarily a problem: frankly, it’s quite refreshing that this photographer chooses to focus on the more upbeat aspects of South African society (inevitably overlooked in a country which, 15 years post-democracy, continues to excel in representations of inequality and socio-economic tragedy). Veleko routinely poses her subjects in recognisable cityscapes, with Newtown in Johannesburg and Cape Town’s Long Street and surrounds being favourites. Durban gets a fair mention but Pretoria, Bloemfontein, East London, etc., ah well... Of course this may simply be a matter of practicality, but it seems to me that this point begins to reveal certain failings with respect to the ‘Wonderland’ endeavour.

An unprecedented exhibition exploring the broad spectrum of contemporary African art, design, and craft worldwide, 'The Global Africa Project' premieres at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) on November 17, 2010. Featuring the work of more than 100 artists working in Africa, Europe, Asia, the United States, and the Caribbean, the exhibition surveys the rich pool of new talent emerging from the African continent and around the world. Through furniture, architecture, textiles, fashion, jewelry, ceramics, and basketry, as well as selective examples of photography, painting, sculpture, and installation work, the exhibition actively challenges conventional notions of a singular African aesthetic and identity, and reflects the integration of African art and design without making the usual distinctions between 'professional' and 'artisan'.

'Reflections on the Self: Five African Women Photographers'

Zanele Muholi and Nontsikelelo Veleko at Southbank Centre

'Reflections on the Self' features five contemporary African women photographers whose work deals with women's narratives through self-portraits or portraits of others. The artists are Hélène Amouzou (Togo, Belgium), Majida Khattari (Morocco, France), Zanele Muholi (South Africa), Senayt Samuel (Eritrea, UK), and Nontsikelelo Veleko (South Africa). The exhibition, curated by Christine Eyene, focuses on female photographic practice in Africa and the diaspora, and examines the gaze of women photographers and how this is informed by the politics of representation. The title refers literally to the mirror image and also to photography as a means of thinking about the self, as both subject and object.

Organised by the Hayward Gallery to correspond with the 100th International Women's Day (08 March 2011), this exhibition will be shown in the Royal Festival Hall (Spirit Level) of the Southbank Centre.
