'Featuring Simplicity as an Irrational Fear'

Curated by Lerato Bereng, 'Featuring Simplicity as an Irrational Fear' explores the concept of simplicity and its impact on the direction of contemporary South African art discourse. Bereng takes as her starting point the idea that simplicity, often considered in both art production and art criticism as a failing, can be a more than one dimensional. Featuring the performance-based work of Nathalie Bikoro, Donna Kukama and Nástio Mosquito, Bereng draws on the absence of the performer and the space between event and its representation to draw out the complexity inherent in works that appears visually and conceptually succinct at first glance.

In Zander Blom's new body of work the artist shifts his focus away photographic images in which painting features as a distinctive element of his performative constructions, into oil painting proper. The show includes energetic painterly gestural abstractions on linen, drawings on paper, and a new series of stark black and white photographs that extend the concerns of his previous work.

DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid presents 'Kino-Glaz' ('Cinema Eye') as part of the FOREX series, an audiovisual remix/rescoring of Russian filmmaker Dziga Vertov's 1924 film of the same name. With this project, DJ Spooky goes back to the 'roots of the roots' of cinema by looking at films that Vertov made prior to his classic Man with a Movie Camera. DJ Spooky rescores and remixes Vertov's film with a contemporary soundtrack based on a combination of contemporary art's dialectical relationship with video-montage and his own work as a composer, artist and writer.
