'Coloured People'

Helen Joseph at Everard Read Gallery

Joseph is interested in the issue of abuse, which she depicts in her work by using the wrapped, bound and sewn-on female form to symbolize this phenomenon, especially prevalent in South Africa. Joseph examines how the strong often exert their power over the weak. She is concerned with this issue on both a personal level and on a much larger scale, considering how even countries abuse their power over other countries.

Joseph’s work is an ongoing exploration of these issues; her style juxtaposes the restful postures of nude with scratchy, pulsating strokes of brush, charcoal or pencil, suggesting the ever-present violence that lies beneath the seemingly calm surface of her subject matter.

Sipho Ndlovu

Ndlovu makes use of images of cows in many of his paintings. Cattle are very important in South African cultures. They are fungible assets that our ancestors used as currency before there was any formal monetary exchange system in place. Cattle used to be exchanged for goods, services and, in the principal of lobola, a young man pays the bride’s father with cattle for the privilege of her hand in marriage.
