'Fired'
Various artists at Iziko William Fehr Collection at the Castle of Good Hope'Fired' is a semi-permanent exhibition of South African ceramics at the Granary in the Castle of Good Hope which opens on 26 February 2012.
Ceramics, shaped by human hands and transformed by fire, is simultaneously art and craft, durable yet fragile, embodying both abstract ideas and practical utility. The exhibition celebrates the artistry of southern African potters and ceramic artists from the archaeological past to the present. Drawn from the vast collections of the Iziko Social History department, the exhibition reflects the coming together of museum collections, previously separated by apartheid. Focusing mainly on ceramics made or used in South Africa, the exhibition brings together the work of rural African potters, local studio pottery, imported wares of historical significance and contemporary ceramics. It embraces the diversity of both locally-made ceramics and those that found their way to southern Africa through networks of trade and commerce. The objects on exhibition have been collected over almost a century through archaeological excavation, fieldtrips, donations, sponsorships, purchases from commercial galleries and at auction, or acquired directly from artists.
‘Fired’ can be viewed daily from 9.30am - 3.30pm, except on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
26 February - 13 August
