'WHITEWASH I'
Workshop at Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA)'WHITEWASH I' marks the first time that contemporary South African whiteness has been the object of a sustained scholarly enquiry that goes beyond individual research. It brings together South African and international scholars, ranging from early career to high-profile researchers from a range of disciplines. An overarching thematic of the workshop is the introduction of critical whiteness studies to the South African academy with a view to developing forms of discourse that are particular to whitenesses in post-apartheid South Africa.
Amongst other factors, this entails considerations of whiteness and identity in visual culture; theories of southern whitenesses; emergent Afrikaner identities in the twenty-first century; and whiteness in academia and the media.
'WHITEWASH I' aims to critically interrogate how whiteness affects institutions , politics, culture and society and its complex relations with privilege and power in post-apartheid South Africa
