'The Carnival (No dogs allowed)'

Artspace will be hosting the opening of a solo exhibition by Jaco Sieberhagen titled 'The Carnival (No dogs allowed)'. Siberhagen writes,

“The first hit song I can remember listening to, was the 1968 Four Jacks and a Jill hit  “It's a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack”. Forty five years later the carnival seems even more curious with so much more to try and make sense of”.

'The Carnival (No dogs allowed)' finds form in a satirical carnivalesque motif whereby Sieberhagen explores socio-political issues in South Africa. Sieberhagen joins the carnivalesique tradition, which subverts and liberates the assumptions of the dominant style through humor and chaos. In the carnival, social hierarchies of everyday life, as well as ready-made truths, are profaned and overturned by suppressed voices. Consequently opposites are turned upside down; fools become wise and kings become beggars, as is seen in Sieberhagen’s work.

The exhibition consists of mild steel sculptures, true to Sieberhagen’s unique style. Sieberhagen views his sculptures as mini-installations. These works create the illusion of mystical silhouettes, parading on the horizon. The sculptures act as floats in a parade, following one other through the exhibition space, commenting on social political issues within a post-apartheid South Africa.
