Proposal for a new city, the same as the old one
Jonah Sack at Michaelis Gallery
'Proposal for a new city, the same as the old one', is an installation by GIPCA (Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts ) Fellow Jonah Sack that depicts Cape Town as a city in the process of being constructed and simultaneously dismantled. The exhibition comprises an installation and a newspaper-format publication, based on Sack’s drawings of Woodstock, Paarden Eiland, Voortrekker Road and other areas of Cape Town, in which the city is represented as abandoned and derelict.
'Proposal for a new city, the same as the old one' is being exhibited upstairs at the same time as 'Third Worlds: Model Cities' at the Michaelis Gallery.

Third Worlds: Model Cities
Group Exhibition
The Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) presents 'Third Worlds: Model Cities' at the Michaelis Gallery this month. The exhibition features an interdisciplinary collaborative approach, and uses fine art, architecture, language and literature to explore the urban landscape of Cape Town, and to research and investigate the changing land and identity of South African and to critique its built structures. It includes architectural models, photographs, an isiXhosa glossary, text and multimedia, with local settlements like Kosovo and Barcelona featured through their namesake’s, thereby drawing critical connections and parallels between different landscapes and communities.
The collaborators are Tessa Dowling (Professor of South African Languages at UCT), Harry Garuba (Professor of English and African Studies at UCT), Svea Josephy (Senior Lecturer at Michaelis School of Fine Art), architect and lecturer Noeleen Murray and architect Carson Smuts.
