'Losing Ground'

Matt Kay at Fourthwall Books

In 2011, Matt Kay, who had grown up in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, heard of plans to build a dam on the Mooi River as a response to the rising water needs of Durban and other major cities in KwaZulu-Natal. The valley in which the dam was to be constructed would be completely flooded. Kay began photographing the valley and the surrounding area, creating three, loosely connected series of images. The work was an attempt to understand how an image could mark the passing of something, how it could signal not only a decisive event, but also the process of change between two events.

'Losing Ground' is about the photographer’s claim to being present, a witness to the shaping of a landscape and the passing of an era in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands. Kay brings a fresh and original perspective to the fraught questions of land, transformation and environmental degradation that beset South Africa. He forms no judgments but adopts the role of a documenter of change. Despite this stance, the images suggest a deep connection to the subject matter and a clear and compassionate vision of the photographer’s relation to the place that he photographs.

'Losing Ground' is part of SA-UK Seasons 2014 & 2015 which is a partnership between the Department of Arts & Culture, South Africa and the British Council.
