'Regions A-G'

Various Artists at Johannesburg City Library

Since April 2013, a group of Johannesburg-based artists have been working in the Johannesburg City Library, investigating its extensive resources. These include a newspaper archive from the city’s early years as well as reference collections of Africana, musical scores and theatrical scripts. The public institution’s singular location and labyrinthian architecture will be made use of, opening up previously unused and hidden areas.

Saturday 9 November will be the culminating event of the years’ work and introduce an ongoing project to be further developed in 2014. The audience can expect a variety of work on display, including: sculptural and performative interventions from Francis Burger, Rangoato Hlasane,"Euridice Kala, Talya Lubinsky, and Fabian Saptouw; collaborative work by Mbali Khoza and Georgia Munnik; artist books by Raimi Gbadamosi, Minenkulu Ngoyi, Jonah Sack and Isaac Zavale, including a book launch event by Ruth Sacks and performances by Bettina Malcomess, Zakara Raitt, Victoria Wigzell and others."

Program of events:

10:30 – 12:30 - Continuous performance by Talya Lubinsky, Zakara Raitt and Victoria Wigzell (various locations)

11:00 - Artist Introduction (main foyer)

11:30 - Book launch for Ruth Sacks’ Twenty Thousand Leagues Under Seas, hosted by the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) (3rd floor foyer)
