At the end of their six-week research stay in the Western Cape, the Berlin-based artistic duo Alexandra Ferreira and Bettina Wind, currently artists-in-residence in the Annex Residency Programme (working in collaboration with the Iziko Museums’ Art Collections and Education & Public Programming Departments and EVIL SON project space), will inhabit two very different spaces to present their new work. The Oval Room at the Iziko South African National Gallery will house an installation of small-scale models inspired by the artists’ findings in South African/local historical documents and urban environment; while the new project space, EVIL SON in Woodstock, will become the site of a one-evening event and exhibition, in which the arti'sts will approach their topics in a more experimental way, making use of video, drawing, objects, text, and other media.
AD HOC, South African National Gallery, Government Ave., Company’s Garden, Cape Town, Wed 31 Oct to Sat 3 Nov 2012 (gallery hours: 10am-5pm). The artists will be present in the space on Saturday 3 November from 11am-12pm.

About the artists:
Over the past six years, Alexandra Ferreira and Bettina Wind have been engaged in an art practice that uses multiple mediums – installation, video, text and drawings – to create multi-layered compositions of heterogeneous materials and storylines. Inspired by a particular site, found objects, archival materials, or current events, the artistic duo develops research-based works that examine the aesthetic, political and economic dimensions of a specific situation from a translocal and multidisciplinary point of view.
Whether attributing political agency to a small cactus from the US-Mexican border zone, or temporarily burying a cheque in the “Snow White Coffin” of a White Cube exhibition, windferreira’s artistic practice is full of (self-)critical irony acting under the cover of a rather cautious and formal mode of presentation.
Although in their broad range of works the artists reach out to other fields such as architecture, urbanism, film history, economy or biology, each project hinges on questions pertaining to (art) production: What are the techniques and politics of display that underlie the presentation of material? What roles do documentation and fiction play in the making of a narrative? How can art practitioners develop strong gestures within working structures that often seem obscure and precarious?
