"The museum should be like a knife, cutting through pretensions and falsehood to the core of what is valuable." This reflection on the role of contemporary museums opens the website (www.modernamuseet.se) of the brand new Moderna Museet in Stockholm. The director, David Elliott, is well known to South African artists - it was he who curated the large show of work which went to the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford in the bad old days. On the website, visit the opening exhibition called 'Wounds', then go to their Artists Online section, which took me to http://www.thing.net/~vanessa/screen.html, the website of British performance artist Vanessa Beecroft, one of the participants in 'Wounds'. Laid out postage-stamp size on her page are a choice of 100 images of JPEG files of scenes from her performances.
